In math we are beginning to use the workshop model. The children are familiar with this model, as it resembles the Reader’s Workshop where we start with a mini lesson. The students then go off to a variety of station activities. Some stations allow opportunity to practice what was taught in the mini lesson while others review previously taught content. Some of the stations incorporate technology such as the SMART board or ipads. So far in Math Workshop this month we are working on building and writing the teen numbers (11-19) and reviewing the attributes of 2D and 3D shapes.
In Reader’s Workshop students are continuing to develop the reading “super powers” of pointer power, picture power, re-read power, snap word power, and sound power. We are very proud of the progress our kindergarten students are making in reading!
In phonics students have been introduced to the letter names and sounds of all of the letters in the alphabet.
Students are continuing to build their instant recognition of the following sight/snap words: the, like, you, me, at, can, me, I, in, am, to, do, go, no, come, see, on, up, a, an, with, he, she, we, is, my, it, said, look, have
We encourage you to practice these words with your child at home too!
*We learned so much when Mrs. Susan Michael, science specialist, visited each of our classes to promote inquiry and learning about evergreens. Thank you for sending in some samples. Look for our observational drawings and writing in the kindergarten wing next time you visit!
*This month we are sharing many gingerbread stories. Beginning with the The Gingerbread Boy, we will then read other gingerbread tales in order to compare the stories and engage in activities all centered on the gingerbread theme.
