We will kick off this month with an exciting school assembly to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday and Read Across America Day. The theme this year is All the Places You'll Go! At the end of the assembly the students will let their wishes and dreams go by releasing a balloon in the school! It will definitely be an exciting assembly!! In class we have been sharing many Dr.Seuss books and created projects that are inspired by his books. Each student has written about their favorite Dr. Seuss story and used the app Dr. Seuss's Camera to create whacky pictures of themselves to go with their writing. This month we are also looking forward to fun St.Patrick's Day activities.
Reading: We are continuing our study of non-fiction text. In whole class and small book groups we are focusing on informational texts. The students are asking and answering questions about key details in the text. We are continuing our study of short vowel word families as well as digraphs ( sh, wh, th, and ch)
Writing: Our focus this month is composing informative writing and exploring digital tools to help publish writing. We are using the website Pebble Go to research facts about our favorite animal from the story The Mitten. Next we will use the facts from our research to create clues about our animal that is hiding in the mitten. Next we plan to create an All About Me books.
Math: Students are continuing to increase their number sense of teen numbers and beginning place value concepts. Students are learning to build teen numbers by using cubes to make 10 and the further ones to represent 11-19. We are also counting by tens and ones to 100. During math center time students are enjoying practicing forming numbers with play dough, displaying teen numbers with manipulatives on ten frames, and playing war to compare numbers.
Handwriting: Miss Carla has started focusing on the lowercase letters using mini chalk boards and the Wet, Dry, Try technique. The kindergarteners love it!
