Happy Spring! To begin the month of April, the kindergartners enjoyed watching a wonderful performance of Charlotte's Web presented by their Second Grade Book Buddies. This month we will celebrate Earth Day by learning ways to help protect and care for our Earth. We will be creating a class book to share our ideas! Later this month, author and illustrator, Lizzie Rockwell, will be visiting our school on Young Author's Day. We can't wait to see what she will share with us. We have already starting reading some of her books! We just published our own books called A Day in the LIfe of..... These books detail a typical day of a kindergartner from morning to evening!
Math: Kindergartners are learning the concept of addition and subtraction through stories and using manipulatives. They are learning different strategies to solve problems such as making a picture, using a number path, counting on, using a ten frame or mental math. During math stations, students are rolling and adding dice, counting up dominoes, writing number equations and solving word problems on the SMARTboard.
Reading/Writing: Kindergartners enjoy retelling stories using their story hand which is a visual aid to help them remember the parts of a story: character, setting, beginning, middle, end, and problem/solution. Using flannel boards, finger puppets, story slides and props, the students enjoyed retelling favorite stories. They especially enjoyed creating a story map to retell the story, We're Going On a Bear Hunt! I hope they had fun retelling it to you at home! During writing time, the kindergartners used a graphic organizer to plan a story. Using their plan, they wrote a story with a beginning, middle and end. They did a wonderful job! We are also focusing on editing our work for capitals to begin a sentence, punctuation to end our sentences, and finger spaces between words.
Have a wonderful spring vacation!
